School Girls; or The African Mean Girls Play

For this production of School Girls my professor decided to set in Ethiopia in 1965. School Girls explores the social hierarchy of teenage girls. Eurocentric beauty ideals and colorism was a very important theme within this play and I highlighted the transition of starting to accept and embrace your appearance and culture. These girls are struggling through their own insecurity and toxic friendship dynamic, the uniforms they must wear for school highlight each of their differences while at the same time making them feel invisible as individuals. We all have to work hard to find ourselves in high school, repeating our old patterns until we can transform into someone who is better than our past. (for research and paperwork click here)
